Around Inverloch | French Island | Around Toora | Shaun's Hometown | Inverloch Movies | Our Date
After a week in Lakes Entrance, we packed up for Inverloch, Shaun's oceanside hang-out since he was an infant. Claiming this is the safest beach around, he can't wait to get the kids here to swim with us. Me neither.

We were going to stay at one place, but everything was booked up so we had to stay at a hotel. This was a drag. It was the hottest night of the trip and the air didn't circulate too well in the room. We got the last room in Inverloch - a family room with 3 beds.

We had a bunch of food with us because we were staying at cabins and luckily there was a small fridge in this room - and a toaster. Shaun fashioned some aluminum foil over the top of the toaster and warmed his sandwich that way. I had tuna I think. It was a long night and we were both really hot and uncomfortable.

The next day we packed up again and had some time to kill. Shaun took me out to Eagles Nest, a look out onto a rock formation which at one time looked like an eagle's nest and still does from the Inverloch beach. But, from the look out, it looks like a rock which has eroded nearly away.

Shaun climbs up on the fence and pretends to be flying. He's an eagle. :-) I'm thinking, "Ok I am married for a week and I am now a widow." but he survived the fence balancing act. Two years ago, at the little river gorge he was anxious to climb fences that would kill him too. Gee, am I That tough on him :-)?

I'm used to beach towns being totally overrun with hotels and commercial properties on the ocean. Without exception, all the places we swam were very private. Lakes Entrance (Lake Tyres), Inverloch and of course the Prom beaches. To get to a beach at Inverloch, you drive down a residential road and there is a grassy parking lot and a public toilet (public toilets are everywhere). Shaun parked along the road and we climbed a 12 foot high dune to the beach below.

We have no pictures of the fun we had at the beaches because we didn't want to damage the new Sony Mavica F83 that we'd bought for the trip. (Traded my brother 3 websites for it. A good deal for both of us.) Either sand could have ruined it or someone could have stolen it, so we elected not to bring it. Though we did bring it to the Promitory later in the week.)

There was lots of Seaweed debris in the ocean at Inverloch. The first seaweed I had seen. Even looked like debris from a fallen down pine tree or something. But it was harmless stuff. Everyone played in the water without concern. The seaweed is natural and there wasn't really that much of it anyway and the ocean floor was a very comfortable sand. No rocks at all. All the beaches I have played in in Australia are so much better and cleaner than our own. I know the kids will love it. Even if they choose to just play in the sand.

Inverloch looks like a great little town. Lots of little shops. Touristy stuff. A fresh bread bakery of course. Maybe two. Two booming take-out businesses side by side. One sells award winning ice cream (passion fruit was great) and the other is a standard fish and chips shop.

Fish and Chips take out shops are everywhere. If McDonalds and Burger King overrun the world, they will steamroll a quaint and wholesome industry where Mr and Mrs Proprietor is painted over the door frame. Shaun went to the counter of one of the shops and ordered what I thought was "a medium order of chips". When his order came up, they handed him a huge (1'*10"*2") package of chips. I said "Is that a medium order of chips?!?!?: He said "Medium?" incredulously. "No. This is the minimum order!" I could not wait to tell Ricky. By the end of the honeymoon, I was pretty sick of fish, but it is very good and puts Long John Silvers to shame.

We stayed at a place called 'The Sand Castles". Owned by a retired couple, the land consisted of 3 brand new cabins and 2 older cabins, a wash building, a table tennis room, and a tiny play area. We played table tennis every night (here and at lakes). The Cabins were great. I maintain I could live in one easily. Next year I am hopeful that we will get the cabin at the end. Cabins have a bedroom, a bath, full kitchen, a porch, alarm clocks. radio. Very comfortable. Be sure to read "Our Date".
