Conclusion...

This is not an unusual story. It's all too typical. But, this IS why I cut the notice out of the paper. And this is why I read Bob Dambach's column on the moving wall's arrival. And this IS why I will go see the replica on March 20th.

Since its inception, I have felt the gnawing at my insides to go to Washington. Not to stand on the steps of congress. Not the Smithsonian. Not the Archives. Not JFK's gravesite. There is a need within me to scour the marble etching, to see and feel the letters R-O-B-E-R-T B-R-O-O-K-S. Perhaps it is this feeling, this craving to be cleansed, lodged within so many Americans, which has caused the creation of the Moving Wall.

The void within our country has been so great and in such gaping need of purge. Perhaps this carthartic expression of gratitude to our young men and women won't prevent tomorrow's wars but maybe, just maybe, the Vietnam War Memorial and the Moving Wall will give us pause...
